We are Daren Fluke and Lisa Brady, partners beyond compare and each other’s favorite adventure companions. We met in 2001, married in 2004, and embarked upon the purchase and major renovation of a 100-year old house immediately upon returning from our honeymoon. While this process definitely brought the honeymoon to an end, it failed to break the bonds of our commitment to one another. We therefore thought to try a 15-hundred mile tandem bike trip. . .
Honestly, though, this trip is the culmination of a long process begun in the halcyon days of our initial meeting when Lisa tentatively shared her deepest desire and long term life goal to ride a bicycle cross country. Daren enthusiastically ran with it and blithely suggested that they buy a tandem on EBay and ride it home from wherever it was located (he was thinking a big ride, and began searching for tandems in distant cities and towns such as Nampa, Caldwell, and Mountain Home. . .) Life however, intervened as it will and our attentions turned toward the demands of careers and home, and the big bike trip remained a distant wish and aspiration for “later”. . .
In 2009 fate *smiled* upon us in the form of a tandem Cannondale bike. Alas, the bike is located in Anchorage, and therein lays the genesis of the fabulous Anchorage to Boise by Boat and Bike Tour. Many people have asked us, how we got this bike, why is it in Anchorage, etc. Here’s the back story:
At a manager’s meeting in October 2009, I found myself chatting with Laurie from PCLI Anchorage who told me about a bike she was trying to get out of her way. Ears perked up and I told her I was very interested in it. Contact was made with Dr. Robert Ford who owned the bike and also PCLI. I asked him if he would consider selling it to us and told him the half baked idea we had of flying to Alaska and riding it home. I guess he liked that idea and agreed to sell it to me. The implications of this action were not fully realized until much later. Read our blog to find out what happens.
